LESSON 06 · ACT ON IT
Should you extend the security platform you already own, or add a specialist?
SHORT ANSWER
If you already run Tenable, Rapid7, Palo Alto Networks or Microsoft, their own ASM products slot into tools your team knows, with less integration work. A specialist may go further on discovery, proof or WAF posture and can still feed the platform. The right answer depends on where your gap is.

Desk research from public vendor pages read in September 2026, updated 2026-10-11. Profiles follow our published method; we did not run the products.
What does extending the platform give you?
One vendor, one console and data that already joins up. Tenable Attack Surface Management feeds Tenable One next to Tenable vulnerability data. Rapid7 Surface Command sits in the Command platform next to InsightVM and InsightCloudSec. Cortex Xpanse ties into Cortex XSOAR playbooks and Prisma Cloud. Microsoft Defender EASM runs as an Azure resource and is billed on the Azure bill.
What can it cost you?
Depth in the area you are short of. On the pages we read, exploit testing is not described for Tenable Attack Surface Management, Cortex Xpanse or Microsoft Defender EASM, and active validation is not described for Surface Command itself. If proof is your gap, the platform's ASM may not close it.
What does a specialist give you?
Depth in one or two jobs, plus connections to the platform you keep. On the pages we read, IONIX names Cortex XSOAR, Prisma Cloud and Microsoft Azure Sentinel among its integrations, and Censys names Microsoft Sentinel, Azure and Tenable VM. A specialist that connects to your platform lets you add proof or WAF posture without moving your workflow.
How does the finder handle this?
If you say you run one of the four platforms, the finder adds points to exposure management platforms, gives 4 points to that platform's own product and 2 points to vendors whose pages name a connection to it. The rule is the same for every vendor and is published on How we map.
How do you decide?
- Name your gap: discovery, proof, data, the cycle or the edge.
- Check whether your platform vendor's ASM product describes that job on its own pages.
- If it does, extending is usually simpler. If it does not, look at specialists that connect to your platform.
What next?
Run the exposure finder with your platform selected, then compare two candidates in Facts in columns.
